Margate Elementary School 3rd Grade Teacher, Alava Alexander, is teaching kids how to run a business at an early age. She shows them how to determine profit, salaries and expenses, and imparts real world experience in dealing with customers, counting money and running the cash register. She calls it Kidz �n� Biz. A young, overweight Mom entered the convenience store the other day and gave her child a choice of what to have for breakfast. The child, appearing about six years old and overweight too, chose the strawberry cr�me wafers for $0.99, a mass of bleached flour and sugar void of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber. It's time we stop feeding our kids junk. Bad diet is adversely affecting the minds and bodies of a whole generation, the least problems of which may be physical obesity. To attend the 3rd Annual Arts & Sciences Showcase at Margate�s Atlantic West Elementary is to live every parent�s dream: see your children sing and dance, relish in their artwork and watch them explore scientific realms. Hundreds of parents and teachers looked on while the AWE Soaring Eagle Chorus, comprised of students in grades 2 through 5, performed classics to Calypso, throwing their hands in the air, twisting, shouting and bopping their bodies to a boogie beat. We read stories daily about budget cuts in education and how Margate�s children are being affected. Teachers are on strict budgets with regard to copies that can be made monthly. Students take home fewer worksheets and supplements. Some of the richest and most timely materials available to teachers are not making it into the hands of students because of the copy quotas.
